- The new patient holding, pre-Cath screening and post-Cath monitoring area in Beth Israel’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab opened last week at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by administrators, cardiologists and nurses. This expansion nearly doubles the size of the prep/recovery area--providing the capability to prepare multiple patients at any given time and increase workflow efficiency. The area features seven additional beds and state-of-the-art technology, including touch-screen cardiac monitors and EKG improvements, all designed to improve care delivery. In addition, there are finished locker rooms and bedside televisions to enhance patient privacy and comfort.

BI Heart Institute Celebrates Heart Month
- Beth Israel’s Heart Institute in conjunction with the Friedman Diabetes Institute and Karpas Health Center will be hosting Heart Month activities during the month of February.
- Education Sessions are being offered in celebration of Heart Month
- Events will include Go Red for Women on Friday, February 5th where there will be free cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, and body mass index screenings as well as a lecture on woman and heart disease.
- Cardiac Rehab week will be celebrated with two yoga sessions and an educational session on exercise. There will also be lectures on how to use AED (Automated External Defibrillator), an introduction to Electrophysiology for nurses, coronary bypass grafting, and why African Americans are at an increased risk of heart disease.
- We also are sponsoring a Heart Healthy Day at PACC on February 17th. All screening participants will have the opportunity to enter a variety of raffles that will help promote a heart healthy lifestyle.

January 2010
- The Attending Cardiology Service (ACS) was opened on January 12th; a 15 bed unit located on 10 Linsky. This unit is currently staffed with four Nurse Practitioners 24/7 and they are: Jacqueline Lagazo-Guia, NP, Jessie Kim, NP, Milla Arabajian, NP and Rivka Cohen, NP. Attending cardiologists or patients without a private cardiologist can be admitted to this service. It is anticipated that the protocol-driven care will result in decreased length of stay, decreased recidivism, and a switch to out-patient management and testing, and improved patient satisfaction

- Congratulations to Greenpoint Cardiology on receiving accreditation through the American College of Radiology for Vascular Ultrasound. Accreditation represents high practice standards and provides a high level of confidence for patients, referring physicians, and managed care organizations that only the highest quality care is being provided. - The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is now performing procedures using Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR) to relieve severe angina in patients that are not candidates for bypass surgery or angioplasty. - Congratulations to 8 Linsky and 10 Linsky on having Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores in the 99th percentile for the month of September. HCAHPS is a nationally standardized, publicly reported survey of patient’s perceptions of their hospital care.

- Dr. Navin Nakra joined the Interventional Cardiology Team as an Attending.
- The Heart Institute welcomed Rodney Thomas, Jr., MPH as Operations Manager.
- Dr. Joseph Tawil joined the Cardiology Division as an Attending.
- Drs. Shafik Hanna-Moussa and Aslam Ahmed Faraz are the Interventional Fellows for the academic year July 2009 - June 2010.
- Dr. Dali Fan is the Electrophysiology Fellow for the academic year July 2009 - June 2010.
- Cath Lab Construction - The first phase of our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory expansion project has began on April 1, 2009. The Prep and Recovery Area will be expanded from 7 to 14 beds, which will greatly improve the services we offer. This is anticipated to be completed by January 2010. The second phase of the Catheterization Laboratory expansion will be to build a new Catheterization Laboratory to accommodate our increasing volume and also allow for peripheral interventions as well as Electrophysiology procedures. This Laboratory will be completed in 2010.

- Caught Being Great - Lena Lau-Chang, NP, Christine Taylor, RN., Reshma Thomas, NP., and Andrea Radoff, RN., received the BIMC's Employee Recognition Award, which recognizes employees who have gone beyond their job duties to assist a fellow employee. The award also recognizes employees who exhibit special kindness toward patients and their families, as well as toward other employees of the medical center.

- The Heart Institute participated in the American Heart Association's "Start! Wall Street Run & Heart Walk" on May 19, 2009. Our team raised $2,146 to fight heart disease and stroke locally in our community.

- Congratulations to Alexander Askanas, MD, Russ Berdoff, MD, Marvin Berger, MD, Steven Bergmann, MD, Steve Evans, MD, John Fox, MD, Niki Kantrowitz, MD, Phil Varriale, MD, Paul Wein, MD, Benjamin Zaremski, MD for being selected by Castle Connelly Medical Ltd. as America's Top Doctors. Doctors are selected after peer nomination, extensive research and careful review and screening by Castle Connelly's doctor directed research team.
- Dr. Margaret Furman, MPH, F.A.C.C has been named Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Director of Preventive Cardiology. Dr. Furman will be evaluating patients for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Enhanced External Counter pulsation (EECP). Additionally she will have a role with the Continuum Woman's Care Network.
- BI in the News - Dr. Margaret Furman was interviewed by CBS News Channel 2 and Dr. Susan Hecht was interviewed by WCBS 880 radio both discussing women and heart disease.

We will be starting our events with a Stress Management/Yoga Session on February 4th, followed by Go Red for Women on Friday, February 6th. There will be free cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, and body mass index screenings as well as a lecture on woman and heart disease at 9:30 AM. During the second week of Heart Month we will offer education sessions on The Unhappy Heart Syndrome as well as an Introduction to Electrophysiology for Nurses. There will also be lectures on how to use AED (Automated External Defibrillator), nutrition, heart failure, smoking cessation, diabetes, and in addition we will offer a special education session in honor of African American History Month, "Why African Americans are at an increased risk of heart related ailments and what you can do about it?"

- Mimi Harrison, RD - Mrs. Harrison, Registered Dietician, is performing nutritional counseling in the Cardiology suite at PACC on Thursday afternoons. She has a Master of Science from New York University in Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health.

- Dr. Margaret Furman, MPH, F.A.C.C. joined the Cardiology Division. She will be seeing patients in the hospital and at PACC, working with the fellows and conducting community outreach in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
