The Cardiac Care Unit, often referred to as the CCU, is an 8 bed unit located on 9 Dazian. The unit specializes in providing intensive care to critically ill adult patients ranging in age from 18 – 91.  Typically, patients are admitted to the CCU for continuous monitoring and management of their heart and lungs.  Most patients are admitted with one or more of the following conditions: AMI (acute myocardial infarction)/heart attack, arrhythmias (heart rates that are too slow or too fast), congestive heart failure, hypothermia protocol following an AMI, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump, Swan Ganz monitoring after undergoing coronary angioplasty, pacemaker insertion or hypertensive emergencies.

The unit prides itself on its teamwork.  As an interdisciplinary team, (comprised of physicians, registered nurses, patient care associates, respiratory therapists, social workers, nutritionists, and housekeepers) all work collaboratively to achieve the best patient outcomes and to ensure quality of care for each patient.  Our goal is to make our patients stay ALWAYS the best.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Beth Israel Medical Center has a 24 hour-7day a week full service Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL) with three adult suites. We are located on the 11th floor of the Dazian building.  A fourth state of the art adult suite is going to be built in our phase 2 of the construction. The Unit provides Diagnostic Catheterizations, Percutaneous Coronary Interventions, Stent Placement, Rotational Atherectomy, Valvuloplasty, Intra-aortic balloon pump insertion, IVUS, and Peripheral Interventions.

The Cardiac Cath Lab is a designated STEMI Center. In 2008, there were 5977 cases performed 1775 of which are Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and 4202 are Diagnostic Catheterizations. During the first quarter of 2009, about 30% of our cases are being done by transradial approach (through an artery in the wrist) which is less painful and more convenient for the patient since they are able to sit up and eat immediately after the procedure. With the transradial approach the patients can get out of bed 2 hours after the procedure. The cases are performed by highly qualified cardiologist/interventionalist assisted by interventional, and cardiology fellows, registered nurses, nurse practitioner, cardiovascular technicians, patient care associates and business/administrative associates.

The Attending Cardiology Service, often referred to as ACS, is the newest addition to the division and is located on 10 Linsky of the Beth Israel Medical Center. It is a 15 bed unit staffed by Nurse Practitioners 24/7 and allows Attending cardiologists to directly admit their patients who require specific cardiac monitoring while in the medical center. Also, patients without a private cardiologist can be admitted to this service. It is anticipated that the protocol-driven care provided by the team will result in decreased length of stay, decreased re-admissions, a switch to out-patient management and testing after discharge, and improved patient satisfaction.

The ACS unit prides itself on its teamwork.  The unit works collaboratively to achieve the best patient outcomes and to ensure quality of care for each patient.
