 A nuclear stress test, also referred to as a myocardial perfusion scan, is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic heart tests. This technology makes use of small amounts of radioactive tracers to assess blood flow to the heart muscle and accurately detect the presence and extent of obstructive coronary artery disease. Dual-isotope stress testing is performed in conjunction with treadmill exercise or a special medication for patients who are not able to exercise. Three-dimensional, computer-generated images through the heart are created, allowing the doctor to see blood flow abnormalities in a multiview color display. Important data regarding the size and function of the heart’s pumping chambers are also provided by these images.
A multi-gated acquisition (MUGA) study, also known as gated blood pool imaging, radionuclide ventriculography, and equilibrium radionuclide nuclear angiography (ERNA), is one of the most accurate tests for assessing the pumping function of the heart. This test is used to assess heart function in patients with heart failure and in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy agents that can affect the pumping function of the heart.

 A pacemaker is a small, battery operated, implantable device that can sense the heartbeat. When the heartbeat is too slow, the pacemaker will pace the heart and help it maintain a normal rhythm. A pacemaker is made up of several parts: a pulse generator, a connector and leads. The pulse generator contains the battery and the computer or circuitry that make the pacemaker work. The connector is where the leads attach to the pulse generator. The leads are insulated wires which are placed directly in the heart and carry signals back and forth to the pulse generator.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a type of nuclear medicine imaging. A cardiac PET scan is a noninvasive test that can help diagnose heart disease. The PET scan indirectly shows the health of the arteries supplying blood to the heart and the heart muscle itself. It can show the presence of obstructive coronary artery disease and damaged or dead heart muscle resulting from a heart attack. A cardiac PET scan can also help to differentiate nonfunctional, scarred heart muscle from poorly functioning muscle that would benefit from a procedure that restores its normal blood supply, such as coronary stenting or bypass surgery. This is particularly helpful in evaluating patients who are being considered for heart transplantation surgery.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation phase of the program was established in 1992 by Dr. Jonathan Raskin who envisioned a program whereby people with pulmonary disease could safely and comfortably improve their functional ability through exercise and education.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program for persons with chronic lung diseases but is not limited to those with such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or interstitial lung disease, and pre- and post-surgery. Our comprehensive program promotes a progressive exercise and education regimen. The primary goal of pulmonary rehabilitation is to restore the individual with pulmonary disease to the fullest medical, mental, emotional, social and vocational potential of which he/she is capable.
We offer a ten-week outpatient program. The exercise sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There are 2 exercise groups available, 10:45AM –12:00PM and/or 1:00PM – 2:15PM. Exercise sessions are approximately 1hour. The educational lectures are held from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Topics discussed include nutrition, stress management, breathing retraining, sex therapy, yoga, pharmacology. Your spouse/significant other is more than welcome to attend these educational sessions
Each person prior to joining the program will be required to have an evaluation to ensure that you are medically able to participate in the program. The evaluation includes a pulmonary function test, arterial blood gas and exercise test.
